10:04 pm - Farewell....for a week
Tomorrow morning I get on a plane with my husband, my mother, both my sisters, my bro-in-law, and my nephew. 7 people, 7 days together in Florida. Friday and Saturday we're gonna be at Crazy Abuela's and Crazy Tia's houses for my cousin's high school graduation celebration. Sunday...Oh Sunday. Sunday we got to our 2-bedroom suite in the brand-new Kidani Village at the Animal Kingdom. This suite has more square footage than my apartment AND it has 3 bathrooms. Heaven! We will also be attending Star Wars days at Disney on Sunday. How geeked am I to do a lightsaber duel with Mickey Mouse?

6:50 pm - Need Computer Advice
I will post about last night's Ozo concert later...

first, I need advice.

We are almost at max for our desktop's hard drive capacity and are thinking of getting an external hard drive. Basically music and photos are killing us (and the occasional game). Advice please! I don't know what's reliable and I obviously want to keep these things for quite awhile.

I've looked up reviews online (pc mag, cnet, etc) but I feel like I'm just shaking my head in confusion.

Anyone? Please?

6:47 pm - Cabbage
Despite my Polish grandmother's best tries, I can't eat cabbage except when it's in an eggroll. I just can't. And I know why...

it's the smell!

It makes me nauseous. It's horrible. I may lose my Polish heritage card for admitting this but...damn, I just can't do cabbage. Since it's St. Patrick's Day and people have the fucked up idea that boiled cabbage is an Irish delicacy (it's not) it's everywhere today. Ugh ugh ugh

7:37 pm - Taking care of your parents
omg, like seriously.

My father is 53 years old. You would think he's learned how to be a decent judge of people..but no. In some ways, my father is a 12-year old boy with a credit card. He's a big geek who likes science fiction and his computer. On the other hand, he has this psychological thing (likely coming from being raised by his single mother and have 3 sisters) where he has take care of the women around him. It makes him a complete softie for a sob story. 1 of his sister is a complete nut job. She's so far gone over psycho that both myself and my middle sister have disowned her and don't speak to her. This sister of my father's is a walking ghetto drama advertisement. One day her and her crazy children and husband are gonna be on Jerry Springer. I'm just waiting for that day. You would have thought that my father would have learned from having such a sister (for example, like the time she tried to get him to cash out his retirement as well the divorce settlement money to get her embezelling wife-beating husband out of jail) to be wary of crazy women...but no.

My father lives in middle-of-bumblefuck-nowhere, Ohio. He moved for a job 3 years ago. He hates it. He has fallen in with a weird group of people, who he doesn't actually like that much but they invite him to do stuff and he's bored so...yeah. Well one day they asked him to go to a strip joint with them. My father, despite his years in the Marines and being alive for 50+ years, had never been to one so he went. And he met a lady there who, of course, gives him a sob story of how she's trying to support her son. So my Dad, being my Dad, feels bad for her and tries to help her out. He gives her rides to places, he picks up her kid from things, he gives her some money, etc.

Then he starts learning things about this woman. Like that she has a 2nd child, a daughter who's older than the son, who was taken away from her already. Oh yeah...she's addicted to heroin.

My father flipped his shit and he doesn't contact her anymore. She does owe him money which she wrote him a check for which bounced. So he's called the local police on her.

And then I learn that this druggie stripper momma is MY AGE. wtf is wrong with my father?? He's not having a romantic relationship with this woman but he's a complete and utter sucker for women with a sob story.

My middle sister and I have put our feet down. My father is temporarily living in her spare room (he is off from work until November) and babysitting his grandson a lot. He is applying for jobs in Chicago and we made him erase this woman's number from his phone. If he didn't agree to these things, we told him that we were going to call his mother (Abuela)and tell her all of it. In the meantime we're trying to think of ways to teach him some basic wariness of women with sob stories. For many years I have felt like the adult in my relationship with my father (for example, the egg story below, very amusing, very true) but this is whoa.

Egg Story, happens spring of 2008
Dad: Hi Love. How do you know when an egg has gone bad?
Me: How does it smell?
Dad: It smells fine.
Me: What is the expiration date on the egg container?
Dad: uummm, March of 2007
Dad: But they look fine except a bit greenish.
Dad: But they cooked okay.
Me: THROW IT AWAY!!!!!!!
Dad: But they tasted okay.
At this point I passed the phone to my husband without a word and went to make myself a drink.

11:18 am - Today is Tuesday
I was just shocked by the ferocity of the crowd. It was really really strong.

Last night I attempted to make the Nenie Family empanadas from a pseudo-recipe he gave me many years ago. Made the pino the night before so it was cool and greaseless. My problem was the dough. My empanadas were too dough. I think I made either need to make them larger or make them thinner. My dough was also a bit dry. I'm gonna need to play with this. As the husband ate about 8 of them I have no worries that my attempts will go to waste. I served it with arroz con guandules which is the quintessential Puerto Rican rice dish.

I was awoken this morning at 6:30 by a stench and loud noises. They are resurfacing our street but why, oh why, did they have to start at 6:30 AM??? The smell made me completely sick to my stomach. If that's what morning sickness is like (the immediate wake-up yuckiness) then I think I'll pass. btw, if you keep sipping strong made rum drinks all day (because I have no job so I'll be home, can drink, and have no reason NOT to be drunk) then your nose only smells rum and it doesn't matter so much.

current mood: tipsy

12:08 am - Brett Favre
Went to a concert tonight at a Chicago festival (one of the trillion). Saw a band I love. Gaelic Storm. At one point in the set, the frontman suggested that Favre come over to the Bears.

The booing was TREMENDOUS.
People threw a Bears shirt at him.
The lights guys TURNED OFF the stage lights.

Nasty. Nasty. Nasty.

1:30 pm
My life is pretty boring at the moment. Which is kinda nice.
1) They closed one of the poshest Whole Foods in the city because of a rodent problem. This made me laugh. Alot.
2) I have become addicted to and It makes me want to cook/bake magnificant things.
3) I've been exercising alot. Alternating long walks (usually around the cemetary) and running up and down my back stairs until it feels like my heart is gonna bust out of my chest. I hate exercise. Really. Hate it. But I don't have much else to do so I have no more excuses for putting it off.

And my Yay! news of this week...

4) Someone is actually going to buy my 2 Cubs tickets for July 24th. Face value: $22 a piece. Stubhub's price: $70 a piece. My listing on craigslist: $65 YAYYYYY!!!!!

12:50 pm - This week
1) My nephew turned 6 this week. Which now makes him the world's largest 6 year old. At the moment, he stand 4'3" and about weighs about 60 lbs. He's also currently going through a stretching phase. He gains weight for awhile and then shoots in height. At this rate he will be taller than me by the time he is 8.

2) I am making a cake to celebrate the birthdays of my sister, bro-in-law, and nephew today. They're all one week apart from eachother with the nephew ending the group this past week. The cake is also to celebrate father's day.

It's going to be in the shape of a pirate hat. I'll post a photo if it comes out decently.

3) Munchkin starts drivers ed this week. I MUST get my license before my little sister. I MUST!

4) This has also been a rough week. We got a phone call on Thursday morning from the mother of Peter's best friend, Randy. Apparently Randy got sick on Wednesday and went into the hospital....where they discovered that he has leukemia. He needed more tests then the South Bend cancer center could offer so they transported him down to Indy. It was pretty scary for awhile but things are getting better. They've discovered that he has the rarest form of leukemia (APL which is a subset of AML) but it's HIGHLY treatable with a 90% clinical remission rate. So good news and bad news. Because he has the rare one he's got to stay in Indy for a month for chemo and such. This sucks for friends and family and him because he's so far away. Peter went yesterday and spent the day but it was a 6 hour trip (3 hrs there and 3 hrs back) and with gas prices...well...we might have to put some priorities on things for this summer and decide to sell Cubs tickets, not attend weddings or other things in order to be there when he needs us. We'll see. Randy's little sister is keeping a blog at

8:57 pm - Updates
Update 1: The Carleton friend who got engaged to a girl I loathe...

Ok, so after much much debate and internal strife I decided that weren't really not friends anymore. He's Peter's friend and has been for years but he and I haven't really been friends (No, he's not anyone on lj, his name is Erik). I have removed him from my friends list on facebook and myspace. He knows how I feel about this girl and I think he has an inkling of how I may not be able to restrain myself from telling him that he's making the biggest mistake of his life.

Am I overreacting? Possibly. Am I happy with this decision? Yes. Do I feel calm about this now? Yes. Will I go to the wedding? I will go IF the Cubs win the world series against the Chicago White Sox. So it's not out of the realm of possibility....

Update 2: School
Has decided NOT to allow me to do my final internship this summer. Now I have to do it in the fall. It's my last class for my degree which will not be technically conferred in December.

Update 3: Job
Which means I need to get a job because I've got no FASFA income this summer. Damn. But do I really want to work res life at DePaul or IIT? Can I live with 18-year old college students again and NOT kill them?

Update 4: Cubs
We went to the May 27th game which was my sister Nysa's 26th birthday. In a move of bleacher brilliance, the entire right bleachers was taunting Ether of the Dodgers by calling out what foot he was moving. He moved left, they shouted left. He moved right, they shouted right. He ran, they shouted both as fast as they could. It actually broke him so he waved to them as he was laughing.

May 27th was also FREEZING. We had layers upon layers. Blankets, warm beverages, scarves, hats, gloves, double socks, etc. This is ironic since Peter and I went to a game with Nenie & Unnin a couple weekends prior where we got a bit sunburned.

It was also FUKUDOME BOBBLEHEAD night. These suckers are currently going for good money on ebay and craigslist.....and we have an extra because we each got one. Yay!

7:22 pm - If you can't think of something nice to say....
What do you say when a friend, who you think the world of, decides to get engaged to a foul loathe-inspiring hag? I'm having a hard time with this as I'd rather tell him exactly what I think of her. Oh yeah, I'm also a foul-mouthed bitch so I'm also trying to repress that but man it's hard.

1:47 pm - Sinus Infection
Ok, just trying to finish school. Theoretically I'm supposed to walk in graduation on Saturday but I'm soooo behind on all my work and my school SUCKS at communication so I have no idea if I can still walk. In the meantime, I have a sinus infection. Despite my friend the neti pot, I've still been having a bad one and cannot take over the counter stuff because they're bad for my blood pressure. So I've decided to go spicy instead. And I don't like spicy, and I don't like tomato soup, but here's what I had for lunch today...

Spicy Tomato Soup
*Low-sodium creamy tomato soup from Trader Joe's
*Trader Joe's party-sized meatballs
*1/2 of a red bell pepper
*Some boiling water
*LOTS of cayenne pepper
*Lots of Louisiana original hot sauce
*some onion powder
*some low-sodium beef bouillon

Result: Nose running like a waterfall

9:57 am - How to get rid of people on the phone....
Note: I REALLY REALLY hate it when people call early on a morning when I was up late doing schoolwork.

Caller: Hello, is Peter home?
Me: No he's not. Can I take a messge?
Caller: This is the Democractic Congressional Somethingorother. We'd like to talk to you. Are you his wife?
Me: No, I'm his sex buddy.
Caller:.....oh, well....ok..... I'll just call back later tonight.
Me: That'd be great. Goodbye.

current mood: pleased
